Why go
If you want to see the landscape often associated with traditional Chinese paintings, the Guilin–Li River–Yangshuo route is one of the clearest introductions. The Li River winds between karst peaks before reaching Yangshuo's countryside, while Longji adds mountain agriculture and ethnic village life.
What makes it special
What makes Guilin and Yangshuo special is how closely the karst landscape is connected to everyday life. Mountains rise directly behind villages, rice fields and bamboo groves along the Li River, and in Yangshuo you can cycle through the countryside, turning the landscape from something you simply observe into something you travel through.
Longji Rice Terraces extend the story into the mountains. Slopes have been reshaped into layers of farmland that change from reflective water in spring to green crops in summer and golden rice in autumn. Miao and Yao communities have farmed these mountains for generations, making the terraces both an agricultural system and a cultural landscape.

Top things to see
Li River
A Li River cruise is the classic way to experience Guilin's karst landscape, with peaks, bamboo groves and villages unfolding along the banks. The river itself is the journey.
Yulong River
Yulong River is quieter than the main Li River route and works well for bamboo rafting and cycling. It offers a closer look at the relationship between farms, villages and mountains.
Longji Rice Terraces
The terraces curve across the mountainsides, showing how generations of farmers transformed steep slopes into productive farmland. Their appearance changes dramatically through the seasons.
Elephant Trunk Hill
Elephant Trunk Hill is Guilin's most recognizable city landmark, formed by a limestone arch resembling an elephant drinking from the river. It works well as a short introduction to the city's karst landscape.
Eat this
Guilin Rice Noodles
Rice noodles are mixed with a savory braising sauce, peanuts, pickled beans, herbs and often beef or braised meat. The classic version is relatively dry rather than a soup noodle.
Beer Fish
Fresh fish is lightly fried and then simmered with beer, tomatoes, chilies, ginger and garlic. The fish stays tender while the sauce becomes slightly sweet, tangy and malty.
What it feels like
Do not make the trip only about the river cruise. The cruise provides the grand landscape, while cycling in Yangshuo and staying around Longji provide the smaller, everyday views.
Reality check
Guilin and Yangshuo are established tourist destinations, and areas such as West Street are highly commercialized. For a quieter experience, move beyond the main tourist streets into the countryside.
