DiDi in English: China's Ride-hailing, Ready Before You Fly

DiDi is China's Uber — and the international version of the app was built for travelers: full English interface, foreign card payments, upfront fares. Register once at home and the first ride from the airport becomes the easiest part of your arrival instead of the hardest.

Step 1 — Register before departure (5 minutes)

Download DiDi — the international version — from your app store and sign up with your foreign mobile number. The interface runs in English automatically. Add a payment method under Settings: a Visa/Mastercard, or Alipay once that app is set up. No Chinese ID, bank account, or local number is required.

Step 2 — Book like a local

Type your destination in English (hotel names in Chinese characters work even better), pick Express for the standard tier, and confirm — the fare is quoted upfront and the ride is charged automatically at drop-off. Nothing is negotiated, and the meter worry disappears entirely. Receipts can be emailed as itemized PDFs from the trip screen.

Step 3 — Airport pickups, zone by zone

Chinese airports organize ride-hail pickups into lettered and numbered zones (A, B, C — B2, and so on). The app shows your car's zone; the signs in the arrivals hall show the same letters. Walk to the matching zone, check the plate number on your screen, done. If you cannot find the car, show the driver your phone — the plate is right there.

Street taxis still work — and here's the etiquette

Licensed taxis run on meters — make sure it starts at flagfall (base fare) when you set off.
Have your destination written in Chinese or show it on a map screen; save your hotel's Chinese address on day one.
Keep small bills (10–50 CNY, about $1.50–7) for change — though most street taxis now accept scan payment too.
DiDi also runs as a mini-program inside Alipay — a handy fallback if the standalone app misbehaves.

Practical notes

Premium tiers (Premier/Plus) cost more but arrive faster at rush hour — the app shows both ETAs side by side.
Trip screens include a live location share, handy for families traveling apart.
Long intercity DiDi rides (2–3 hours) are often cheaper than trains for groups of three or four — compare in the app.
If your card fails in-app, switch the trip's payment to cash and pay the exact quoted fare at drop-off.
