Why go

The defining feature of Xinjiang is scale. This is not one scenic destination but an enormous region where snow mountains, forests, alpine lakes, grasslands, deserts, oasis cities and Silk Road sites can all appear within one long journey. Hidden China's route takes 12 days and crosses from Urumqi through northern Xinjiang, Kashgar, Karakul Lake and Turpan toward Dunhuang.

What makes it special

Xinjiang is special because the landscape can change almost completely within the same journey. Around Kanas, the scenery is dominated by forests, lakes and wooden villages; farther south, the route moves into high mountains, deserts and oasis towns. Kashgar feels different again, with its old city, markets and Central Asian influences.

The cultural diversity is just as important as the scenery. The route passes through Kazakh and Tuva communities, Uyghur cities and Silk Road settlements before reaching Turpan's vineyards and ancient ruins. Rather than treating this as a series of “ethnic attractions,” the more interesting story is how food, architecture, markets and everyday customs were shaped by thousands of years of movement along the Silk Road.

Top things to see

Kanas Lake
Kanas combines forests, mountains and a striking alpine lake, whose color changes with weather and light. Nearby Tuvan communities add a cultural dimension to the landscape.
Kashgar Old City
Kashgar's old city is best experienced as a living urban environment of lanes, homes, markets and mosques. It offers one of the clearest windows into China's historic connections with Central Asia.
Karakul Lake & Muztagh Ata
Karakul Lake sits beneath the dramatic Muztagh Ata massif, creating a classic high‑altitude landscape. The experience is primarily about the mountains, lake and journey rather than organized activities.
Turpan & Jiaohe
Turpan is an oasis in an extremely dry landscape, where vineyards and ancient irrigation systems reveal how agriculture was possible. Jiaohe Ancient City adds a powerful archaeological dimension to the Silk Road story.

Eat this

Xinjiang Pilaf
Rice is cooked with lamb, carrots and onions until it absorbs the rich flavors of the meat and vegetables. The carrots add sweetness while the lamb provides a deep savory flavor.
Lamb Kebabs
Cubes of lamb are skewered and grilled over charcoal, then seasoned with salt, cumin and chili. The outside becomes lightly charred while the inside stays juicy.

What it feels like

The main feeling of traveling across Xinjiang is scale. Long drives are unavoidable, but the landscape outside the window changes constantly—and the road itself becomes part of the experience.

Reality check

Do not underestimate distances or seasonal differences. Mountain roads, remote areas and attraction access can require advance planning.
