Why go
Jiuzhaigou is one of China's most visually surreal natural destinations, with turquoise lakes, forests, waterfalls and snow mountains concentrated within one valley. Huanglong provides a very different geological landscape, while the route also adds Songpan and Tibetan village life.
What makes it special
The defining feature of Jiuzhaigou is water. Instead of one or two scenic lakes, the valley contains a long sequence of lakes, waterfalls and streams surrounded by forest. Mineral deposits, plants and changing light create different shades of blue, green and turquoise, while autumn foliage can be reflected directly in the water.
Huanglong provides a completely different type of landscape. Its layered travertine pools descend down the mountain like natural terraces, creating yellow, blue and green patterns among forests and highland scenery. Combining the two gives travelers a broader understanding of Sichuan's mountain landscapes rather than simply visiting two similar‑looking parks.

Top things to see
Five‑Flower Lake
Five‑Flower Lake is known for its layered blue and green colors and reflections of surrounding forests. Its appearance changes with season and light.
Nuorilang Waterfall
Nuorilang is a broad waterfall surrounded by forest and is one of the valley's most dramatic large‑scale views. Autumn colors add another layer to the scene.
Huanglong Terraced Pools
Huanglong's travertine pools form natural terraces down the mountain, with colors changing according to minerals and light. The landscape is distinctly different from Jiuzhaigou's lakes.
Songpan Ancient Town
Songpan was an important historic trading and transport center in northern Sichuan. Its walls and streets add the human history behind the mountain landscape.
Eat this
Yak Meat
Yak meat is commonly stewed, boiled or dried and served with salt, chili and local seasonings. It is firmer and more intensely flavored than ordinary beef.
Butter Tea
Tea is blended with butter and salt to create a rich, savory drink. It is a traditional highland beverage and can be an acquired taste for first‑time visitors.
What it feels like
Jiuzhaigou can be visually intense without requiring constant strenuous hiking because boardwalks and park transport are well developed. Crowds and queues are the bigger practical issue during peak periods.
Reality check
Autumn is visually spectacular but also one of the busiest periods. Winter can feel completely different, with frozen waterfalls and fewer visitors, but weather and access should be checked before traveling.
Getting there
Most travelers reach the area from Chengdu, either by air or by road.
