China's bullet train network connects major cities. Book tickets in advance through official websites or apps like 12306. Second-class seats are comfortable and affordable. IMPORTANT: Foreign passengers CANNOT scan ID/face at gates — you MUST carry your passport and collect a paper ticket or use the staffed manual channel. Trains provide free hot water so bring a reusable mug. Oversized luggage may require a checked baggage ticket.

Large cities have extensive metro systems with low fares. Buy a transport card at stations or use mobile QR codes (Alipay/WeChat) for convenient travel. Security screening is strict — all bags go through X-ray and liquids must be shown or taken out.

Didi Chuxing is the most popular ride-hailing app, but it REQUIRES a Chinese mobile phone number to register (foreigners without one should ask your hotel to call a taxi for you). Always insist the driver use the taxi meter — 'Da Biao' means 'use meter' in Chinese. Avoid unmarked 'black cabs' loitering outside airports and train stations; they overcharge 5–10x.

Buy a local SIM card or eSIM for reliable mobile data. China Unicom and China Mobile offer tourist packages.

Most international sites (Google, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, WhatsApp) are blocked. CRITICAL: Install AND TEST your VPN BEFORE you leave home — you will NOT be able to download or sign up for a VPN once you land (App Stores and Google Play are themselves blocked). Prepare 2 different VPN services from different providers, as some get interrupted. Good news: Chinese apps (WeChat, Alipay, Didi, Meituan) work normally WITHOUT a VPN.

Buying a local SIM or eSIM is the easiest way to get data. China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom sell 7–30 day tourist packages at the airport on arrival. IMPORTANT: BY LAW, every SIM card purchase requires YOUR PASSPORT and face photo/real-name registration at an official counter. Never buy 'anonymous' or 'pre-activated' SIMs from random street vendors — they are illegal and will be remotely shut off within days. eSIM options are now available online for supported phones.
